I started out as an ink-stained wretch and a slave to deadlines -- in short, a newspaper writer and editor.

The job has a romantic appeal: You meet interesting people and learn important information -- sometimes hours before everyone else in your neighborhood. Whatever projects you worked on yesterday are in the newspaper today, right next to your name.

But that and six quarters will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

After 12 years of daily newspaper life, writing, editing and helping create great graphics in Maryland, Virginia, California and at USA TODAY.

I'd had enough. Working five night shifts a week, or 14 hours on a Sunday, gets old. Let someone else put out the paper.

So I formed
Harbor Sights, a web development company that lets me do what I loved to do most in newspapers -- tell stories. Explain simply and graphically who, what, when, where and why.

A visual journalist (nice term, huh) finds the best parts of your business, and displays them richly on the Internet.

I use pictures, words and graphics to communicate a professional, informative narrative.

Keep it concise, keep it lively.

While I never realized one of my dreams (playing third base for the
New York Yankees), I do work in a great office with my best buddy. And after 12 years of producing sports sections, I can finally go to an Orioles game. Almost any time I want.
